We have around 1/3 acre in vegetable production at this time. It’s a more tilted to sustenance food types than most market gardens because its important to us to grow what we eat as much as is feasible. For sure we have a high tunnel full of tomatoes and succession crops of lettuce and cucumbers but we also grow our own flour corn, dried beans, winter squash and the like. We use the standard organic techniques; no herbicides, no pesticides and no chemical fertilizers. Beyond that though, we also use no till methods and mulching techniques to better manage the soil ecosystem that feeds the plants. With our main high tunnel we are able to grow a number of crops year around, in the cool seasons it grows cold hardy crops with protection from the snow and in the summer it grows heat loving crops that can have a little hard time this far north.
